Just You + Your Breath + a Supportive Group of New Friends
Sometimes life feels really full. School, friends, family, big emotions, and busy brains, it can feel like too much. This group is a special space just for you to slow down, feel safe, and learn tools that help you handle stress and feel more calm, clear, and confident.
This group is based on the work of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, a model used in schools and communities across the world. Studies show that these practices, like breathing, drawing, movement, and guided imagery, can help kids lower anxiety, feel more focused, and learn how to calm down when emotions get big.
You’ll get to move, draw, breathe, imagine, and connect in ways that are fun and meaningful. No pressure. No right or wrong. Just a place to be yourself, supported by caring adults and other kids who get it.
Summer Session Sign Ups:
Day 1: Learn to Calm
We’ll start by creating a safe and kind group space. You’ll learn a cool breathing trick called soft belly breathing and practice grounding tools that help your body calm down when it’s feeling anxious or overwhelmed. We’ll also learn about your vagus nerve, the part of your body that helps you hit the “calm button.” Then we’ll do three drawings that help you share how you’re feeling in your body and heart, no art skills needed!
Why it works: We need non-verbal outlets for expression. Breath-based regulation builds resilience from the inside out.
Day 2: About Stress & Tools That Help
We’ll learn what stress actually does in your brain and body, and how you can turn it down. You’ll try out biofeedback (with things like mood dots and finger thermometers) and learn a relaxing tool called autogenics, where you imagine your body feeling warm, heavy, and peaceful. We’ll also explore what it feels like to eat, move, and listen mindfully, with all your senses awake.
CMBM research shows: Autogenics and biofeedback increase vagal tone, lower cortisol, and improve our ability to manage strong emotions.
Day 3: Shake Out Feelings
Sometimes emotions get stuck inside. Today, you’ll get to talk to a feeling (like sadness, anger, or worry) through sound, movement, drawing and writing. Afterward, we’ll let all that go with a fun shaking and dancing practice that helps release stress and bring your energy back into balance. We’ll finish with quiet breathing to feel grounded and strong.
Why it works: This pairing of inner work and physical release creates a whole-self reset, ideal for navigating hormonal, and emotional changes as we grow.
Day 4: Imagination Magic
Using guided imagery, you’ll go on a peaceful sound journey in your mind to create your own Safe Place and meet your Wise Guide, a helpful part of you that always knows what you need. We’ll explore what brings you peace and joy using music, sound, movement, and imagination. Then we’ll revisit your drawings from Day 1 and notice what’s changed. We’ll end with a simple and special celebration of everything you’ve discovered.
Why it works: Visualization builds self-trust, resilience, and internal safety, especially important when we face external stress.
